stormy again

Sunday August 12, 2012

Today was an unusual day in that it started out quite rolly on the lake and I decided to take some Dramamine for the first time.  I did not get sick but was very drowsy for half the trip.  Once we passed Saginaw Bay it became calm for the last four hours of our trip to Harrisville.  I had hoped to be well beyond this point by today but the weather gods have determined our course and destinations.  We left Harbour Beach at 7AM and arrived here at Harrisville at 5PM.  It was slow going across Saginaw Bay but sped up considerably once getting near shore past the bay.  Since I was able to cook dinner before arriving at Harrisville, we now have the entire evening free to enjoy.

This morning Bob and I embarked on a great adventure.  Our ultimate goal is to make it to Lake Superior but several events have delayed our departure.  Initially we were just going to be a day later leaving because of Bob’s aunt’s funeral and then the weather made it impossible.  We finally left this morning at about 9:34 along with another sailor from Lake St. Clair.  He was in a slightly smaller boat and he was single handing.  The morning started out lovely; I played music from the Caribbean and then settled into the German music which immediately brought my thoughts to my parents especially my father.  The song “So schon war die Zeit” especially made me think of him and how he always seemed to fall into some luck or maybe it was just a plan and hard work but even a plan needs luck. I wanted to dance so bad but there is just so much room on the boat, my dance floor is limited.  The weather seemed perfect as we passed the windmills near Forrestville.  At 11:30 we were faced with thunderstorms and heavy rain.  This was also about the time we had lunch and decided it was better to eat below than to be assaulted by the rain.  I then became queasy and spent the next three hours below lying down.  The rain did let up for a while but the winds continued to push us back impeding our progress.  Bob made a very captainly decision and we stopped at Harbour Beach.  Unfortunately the marina is too shallow so we were only able to tie up to a wall on the outer wall of the harbor.  I managed to lose a fender in the process of getting ready to tie up giving Bob the opportunity to use his new davit system.  Before he could do that however he helped another sailor with the same idea to tie up in front of us.  The dinghy was very easily lowered and retrieval of the fender was a success.  Now I sit here not an hour later and we have been hit with torrential rains…again.

We are still hanging here at Port Sanilac. We looked at weather reports and it appears that we will not leave till tomorrow morning. The wind was howling through the forest of masts here at the marina last night. The flags are straight out from the wind blowing. Waves hit the pier and look like geysers shooting up. We will be going to the annual pig roast up here at the firehouse later today. This morning was all about getting our internet and email devices working. It has been spotty but as you see we were able to get something going. I am working on my new lap top. I am hoping to get photos downloaded immediately and do some blogging. This is practice for our big trip in Oct, Nov. I have already done some face time with the Ipod touch with Ingrid. I hope to stay connected with all if possible.  Bob is working on the motor for the dinghy right now and wouldn't you know it the rain just started pouring.
